eSafe recognizes the enormous challenges of internet safety in wake of the explosion of internet accessibility via mobile devices. Internet today permeates personal and professional lives of a number of children and youth as they constantly bounce between online possibilities and perils in wake of fading online and offline boundaries.

Children and young people are truly becoming digital citizens in an online world. They need to be aware of some of the potentially negative aspects of the technologies. Harmful activities can include bullying and harassment, identity theft and online abuse (such as children seeing harmful and illegal content, or being exposed to grooming for sexual purposes, or the production, distribution and collection of child abuse material).

I wish to welcome you to the eSafe 1st International Conference titled "Children’s Well-Being in a Digital World." We are honored for the kind patronage and inauguration by H.E. Sheikh Nahyan bin Mabarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister for Tolerance and Coexistence.

In line with the local and international efforts of UAE leadership in protecting children from online exploitation and abuse, this international conference provides a platform for government, private, and other educational entities to synergize their efforts towards protecting children and promoting their well-being.

Children’s lives are split between online and offline environments. As more children go online at younger ages, so does their exposure to online risks. Together, we need to understand how to reduce the risk of harming children online while maximizing their opportunities for learning, participation, innovation, and creativity.

I believe we need to proactively engage with children; we need to hear their concerns; we need to understand the ways in which they are vulnerable; we need to collaborate with all stakeholders to formulate strong partnerships; and we need to commit to creating a safe and empowering online experience for children.

I look forward to meeting you at the conference, where we will learn from the distinguished guest speakers and enjoy networking.
